Low temperature properties of a kagome MOF system
Abstract: Metal-organic framework (MOF) systems provide a highly flexible route to producing new materials; their significance was recently recognised in the 2025 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. The MOF of interest here is Co6(HHTT)3. This contains Co ions coordinated with HHTT molecular ligands, resulting in stacked 2D layers. In this structure, two thirds of the HHTT molecules and half of the Co ions form a Co3(HHTT)2 honeycomb lattice. The resulting magnetic network is a kagome lattice of Co spins behaving as effective Seff = 1/2 in the crystal-field-split Kramers-doublet ground state of the ion. The remaining Co3(HHTT) form isolated triangular clusters in the hexagonal spaces within the layers. This unique arrangement creates a highly frustrated quantum magnetic system, making Co6(HHTT)3 a compelling material for further investigation as a potential quantum spin liquid (QSL). No ordering was seen down to 2 K and we propose to explore its low temperature magnetic properties using the HiFi instrument with a helium dilution refrigerator.
