Resolving the Nanostructure of Ionically Linked Comb Polymers at Liquid-liquid Interfaces
Abstract: The molecular organization of ionically linked comb polymers (iCPs) at water-oil interfaces is important for their potential applications in drug delivery and antimicrobial materials but remains poorly understood. Recently, iCPs with a zwitterionic backbone and lipid-like hydrophobic tails have been synthesised, allowing for tuneable self-assembly into structures like giant unilamellar vesicles (i-combisomes). Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the backbone adopts a stiff rod-like conformation at interfaces, and dynamic surface tension measurements show rapid adsorption at the hexadecane-water interface, significantly reducing interfacial tension. Neutron reflectometry will be used to further explore iCP interfacial structures and their anisotropic behaviour at these interfaces.
