Can FµF states probe ultrafast paramagnetic dynamics?

Abstract: In fluorine containing compounds, it is well known that the muon is usually preferentially drawn towards the electronegative fluorine atoms. By implanting close to fluorine the muon spin may interact strongly with one or two fluorine nuclear spins and form an entangled state giving a characteristic beating pattern in its decay asymmetry, with a relaxation that can be explained by considering the muon's coupling to its next-nearest neighbour nuclear moments and beyond. However, in some compounds the relaxation of the FuF state is too strong to be explained by considering those couplings alone, and we have tentative evidence that this may be due to paramagnetic fluctuations. In this experiment, we aim to find out whether paramagnetic fluctuations can indeed act as a source of relaxation for FuF states, by collecting high statistics data on two compounds (CuF2 and MnF3) to attempt to observe this relaxation and see if it correlates with the spin-spin correlation time.
