Exploring Low-Dimensional Spin Chains in Vē?-Based Metal?Organic Magnets

Abstract: The exploration of new materials to probe quantum magnetism remains a central challenge in condensed matter research. While inorganic magnets such as oxides and chalcogenides provide robust lattices, their limited chemical tunability constrains the design of novel spin systems. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) offer an alternative, combining paramagnetic metal centers with modular organic linkers to enable precise control over dimensionality and magnetic interactions. Building on our previous work on low-dimensional frameworks, we now focus on the understudied V2+ ion to access new regimes of correlated magnetism. We have synthesized a novel compound, VCl2(bipy) (bipy = 4,4 -bipyridine), along with its Cr2+ analogue, CrCl2(bipy). VCl2(bipy) represents the first known material in which V2+ ions form chains connected exclusively through chloride ligands, creating a quasi-one-dimensional spin system with S = 3/2. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate antiferromagnetic interactions with TN 3.5 K. We propose to use powder neutron diffraction to determine the magnetic structures and spin correlations of these materials, enabling quantitative analysis of exchange interactions and magnetic ground states. These results will establish VCl2(bipy) as a new model platform for studying low-dimensional quantum magnetism in metal organic systems.
