Microwave-Assisted Green Innovative Composites (MAGIC) to Achieve NetZero in Efficient Hydrogen Storage/transfer Technologies.
Abstract: The Microwave-Assisted Green Innovative Composites (MAGIC) project pioneers sustainable hydrogen storage solutions by developing graphene-reinforced aluminium-lithium metal matrix composites (MMCs) processed via an innovative microwave-assisted heat treatment. Traditional hydrogen storage materials face challenges such as hydrogen embrittlement, high energy processing costs, and limited recyclability. By leveraging focused microwave beam-assisted processing, MAGIC aims to enhance precipitate nucleation kinetics, microstructural uniformity, and mechanical integrity while reducing energy consumption by up to 30% compared to conventional methods. To validate the impact of microwave-assisted heat treatment, Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) at LARMOR ISIS will be utilized to analyze the dispersion of graphene nanoparticles and the evolution of T1 intermetallic phases, which are crucial for improving embrittlement resistance. Findings from previous beamtime experiments (XP2390126, XP2390180, XP2490168) and TEM characterization have confirmed the material?s potential for hydrogen storage applications. MAGIC?s outcomes will impact hydrogen storage tanks, pipelines, aerospace, automotive, underground, and marine applications, directly contributing to the UK?s Net Zero Strategy by enabling efficient, sustainable hydrogen storage solutions.
