The self-assembly of PIBSA-PAM at the iron oxide-dodecane interface in the presence of glycerol monooleate and water.
Abstract: Lubrication of moving components in engines minimises the fuel consumption and the resulting emissions of gasoline vehicles. The friction arising between the contact of moving surfaces can be minimised by the inclusion of organic friction modifier (OFM) additives in engine oils, which adsorb at the engine surfaces and form films that reduce friction. However, their self-assembly at metallic surfaces in the presence of other lubricant additives, such as dispersants, is poorly understood. In this experiment, the adsorption of glycerol monooleate, a known OFM, in the presence of polyisobutylsuccinimide-polyamine, a dispersant relevant to industry, will be characterised using polarised neutron reflectometry at 25 and 60 °C. In addition, the structure and composition of the co-adsorbed films will be characterised with and without added water, which is a contaminant that increases in concentration as lubricant oils age and is known to have an impact on lubrication behaviour.
