Probing Wavelength-Dependent Ion Diffusion in MAPbX3 Perovskites Using Muon Spin Rotation

Abstract: Hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites, such as MAPbX3 (X = I, Br, Cl), continue to attract significant attention for photovoltaic applications due to their exceptional optoelectronic performance. However, their practical use is limited by long-term stability issues, predominantly linked to photoinduced ion migration. In our recent ?SR investigation (K. Papadopoulos et al., Adv. Phys. Res., 3, 202300120 (2024)), we explored the ion dynamics of MAPbBr3 and MAPbCl3 single crystals under white-light illumination and dark conditions. The study demonstrated substantial effects of illumination on methylammonium (MA+) molecular fluctuations and halide ion diffusion. Nevertheless, the specific impact of photon energy on ion dynamics remains unclear. To address this open question, we propose a targeted follow-up study utilizing blue-light illumination (~450 nm), which possesses higher photon energy compared to white light. By employing wavelength-specific illumination combined with muSR, this experiment aims to elucidate the mechanisms governing ion diffusion processes, potentially revealing distinct ion activation pathways and enabling improved strategies for enhancing the stability of perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.
