Temperature dependent structure of molten borogermanate glasses for optical applications
Abstract: We propose to measure the structure of barium borogermanate glasses and melts. These are part of an important class of optical materials for hosting optically active rare-earth ions, making them suitable as scintillator, laser, and magneto-optical glasses, in communications, display and radiation detection applications. Importantly, these materials contain two network-forming cations known to adopt variable coordination environments, both of which are expected to be both composition and temperature dependent. In previously studied borates and borosilicates, we have measured the temperature dependence of the sp3 boron fraction (N4), which is a crucial structural parameter governing many important physical properties, and used this to build structure-temperature-property models. By studying the borogermanates we can extend this understanding into the realm where N4(T) is also influenced by interactions with Ge cations undergoing coordination changes between 4-, 5- and 6-fold states.
