Magnetic Structure of the Quasi-2D Heavy Fermion Metal CePtAs
Abstract: Heavy fermion systems, characterized by their tunable strong electronic correlations, exhibit a range of quantum phenomena including quantum critical points, metamagnetism, and unconventional superconductivity. Recent studies have highlighted the emergence of ferromagnetic (FM) quantum critical points, spin-triplet superconductivity, and two-dimensional van der Waals heavy fermion systems. CePtAs, a cerium-based heavy fermion compound with a hexagonal layered structure, displays antiferromagnetic ordering below 1 K and pronounced anisotropic electronic properties. Preliminary measurements indicate that the antiferromagnetic ground state of CePtAs can be tuned towards a FM phase under applied field and pressure, suggesting dominant FM interactions. To elucidate the magnetic structure of CePtAs, we propose single crystal neutron diffraction measurements using the SXD beamline, which will provide insights into its zero-field antiferromagnetic phase and field-induced FM state. This study aims to advance our understanding of the magnetic interactions and potential FM-driven superconductivity in heavy fermion systems.
