Vibrational spectroscopy of AsH3 and AsD3
Abstract: The hydrogen compounds of the lighter Group V elements PnH3 (Pn = N, P, As) have been important starting materials for industrial processes for many decades, with phosphine and arsine (PH3 and AsH3) being important for the production of semiconductor materials. The crystal structures of PH3 and AsH3 are unknown and their elucdiation is subject to other proposals currently being submitted to ISIS/RAL. Whereas the gas-phase spectra of AsH3 and AsD3 have been studied, there are no studies on the respective solid-state spectra. Inelastic neutron scattering is ideally suited to observe vibration modes from the molecules themselves as well as their lattice modes. As the latter give important insight into their intermolecular interactions the studies are an ideal complement to our crystallographic studies. These are then used to gain deep insight into the hydrogen-bonding networks as a function of the polarity of the pnictogen-hydrogen bonds.
