Strain-induced altermagnetism in epitaxial RuO2/TiO2 superlattices

Abstract: Rutile RuO2, previously suggested to host an altermagnetic phase, remains controversial regarding its magnetic state. While bulk RuO2 is theoretically predicted to exhibit antiferromagnetic order, recent experimental studies on sputter-grown films and bulk samples report non-magnetic behavior. However, preliminary investigations on epitaxially-strained RuO2/TiO2 superlattices using second-harmonic generation (SHG) and magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements revealed magnetic signals with temperature anomalies near 500 K. These suggest that epitaxial strain plays a crucial role in stabilizing long-range magnetic order in RuO2 layers. However, conventional magnetic measurements only provide an averaged response across the superlattice, leaving complex spin configurations unresolved, especially those linked to interfaces. To address the current issues, this one-day proof-of-principle proposal aims to validate the strain-induced magnetic state and its spin configuration in epitaxially-strained RuO2/TiO2 superlattices using polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR). PNR will provide detailed depth profiles of the magnetic structure, enabling us to clarify the role of epitaxial strain and interfaces in the magnetic behavior of RuO2.
