Understanding the magnetic ground state in frustrated Shastry Sutherland lattices via muon spin relaxation study
Abstract: Strongly correlated electron systems with geometric frustration or competing interactions are of significant interest for their potential to host novel magnetic ground states. Over the last two decades, Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) has emerged as a key system to realise two-dimensional quantum magnetism. The SSL consists of orthogonal dimers planes with interdimer coupling J? and intradimer coupling J. Depending on the ratios of the J and J?, various magnetic ground states such as long-range order, plaquette order, and quantum spin liquids (QSL) has been observed. In the context, we would like to investigate an SSL compound, Nd2BaPdO5. The presence of strong frustration in this system results in the persistence of spin fluctuations at low T even in the ordered state. Moreover, spin fluctuations can be tuned by introducing disorder in the system, which suppresses long range ordering at low T and may enhance the quantum fluctuations, leading to disordered state like spin glass, QSL. Hence, disorder is introduced by doping La3+ ion on Nd3+ sites, forming NdLaBaPdO5. Therefore, to study the evolution of spin fluctuations from long range order to a disordered system at low T, µSR investigation is required.
