Quasi Elastic Neutron Scattering Investigations on Gamma Irradiated Hybrid Cellulose Membrane for Uremic Toxin Removal

Abstract: The efficiency of hemodialysis membranes in removing small uremic toxins, such as urea and creatinine, remains a critical challenge for the treatment of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). To address this issue, we propose a hybrid membrane system composed of cellulose acetate (CA) integrated with mesoporous silica (MS) and surface-modified with poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (PEGMEA). This design aims to enhance membrane performance by utilizing the biocompatibility and semi-permeability of CA, the adsorptive capacity of MS, and the hydrophilic, antifouling properties provided by PEGMEA grafting via gamma irradiation at 5 kGy. Structural and morphological characterizations have identified a promising membrane variant, i.e. CA-PEGMEA (5 kGy) hybridized with MS, for further investigation. To gain insight into the molecular-level diffusion of urea, a predominant uremic toxin, we will employ Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering (QENS) at physiological temperature (37°C). This study will assess urea dynamics within the hybrid membrane and its individual components, contributing to a deeper understanding of the transport mechanisms critical to dialysis efficacy.
