Examination of Flow Dynamics in Rotating Heat Pipe for Cooling Electric Motors Utilizing Neutron Radiography
Abstract: This research investigates the thermal performance of Rotating Heat Pipes (RHPs) for cooling electric motors in electric vehicles (EVs). RHPs are compact, efficient devices that transfer heat between an evaporator and a condenser through phase change without requiring external power. The study focuses on key factors influencing RHP performance, including motor rotational speed, fluid fill ratios (30%, 50%, and 70%), working fluids (water, ammonia, and methanol), and orientation angles (0°, 15°, 30°, and 45°). Neutron radiography is used to visualize fluid flow and phase transitions in real time, providing crucial insights into the heat transfer dynamics under various operating conditions. The research setup includes a rotating heat pipe integrated into an electric motor shaft, with temperature measurements and neutron images taken during heating cycles. The results aim to optimize RHP design by analyzing the impact of rotational speed and fluid properties on thermal performance. By leveraging neutron radiography, this study offers an innovative approach to understanding two-phase flow in rotating systems. The findings will contribute to more efficient RHP designs for EV applications, improving cooling performance and extending motor lifespan. Additionally, this work supports green transport initiatives and sustainable thermal management solutions. It will form a significant part of a PhD thesis of research member at the University of Indonesia.
