Evaluation of Residual Stresses in a Trimetal Adapter for International Linear Collider

Abstract: Synchrotron X-ray diffraction has been successfully employed to determine residual stresses generated during explosion welding and electron beam welding in a pioneering trimetal adapter developed for the International Linear Collider at CERN. However, while these measurements provided critical insights, they did not capture the ??-components of strain in the sliced piece of the trimetal adapter. Neutron diffraction will enable the determination of the ??-component of residual elastic strains, which can be reconstructed using a voxel-based eigenstrain reconstruction method from the rr- and zz-components of residual elastic strains. This study proposes using neutron diffraction at the Engin-X beamline to complement synchrotron data, focusing on validating the voxel-based eigenstrain reconstruction method for mapping all tensor components of residual elastic strains and corresponding residual stresses by quantifying the ??- and rr-components of residual elastic strains. By combining neutron and X-ray diffraction data, the study will offer a more comprehensive understanding of the residual stress distribution within the adapter and validate the eigenstrain reconstruction model for optimizing explosion welding processes.
