Thin-film characterisation of sulfonic acid functionalised polyamide membranes for intermediate temperature fuel cell applications
Abstract: Polyamides (PAs) form a class of polymers with exceptional performance for a wide range of functional applications, including light-emitting and electrochromic devices, sensors, separation, and fuel cell (FC) membranes. PA properties are easily tailored by inducing morphological alterations by changing the synthesis pathway and/or conditions as well as incorporating flexible groups into the polymer backbone. A high-performance PA membrane reverse osmosis water filtration membrane is commonly known by being prepared from the crosslinking of m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC). Herein, we have functionalised the same PA membrane using diaminobenzene sulfonic acid as the starting material to introduce a negatively charged sulfonate group on the aromatic ring of MPD monomer. Additionally, we have developed an approach to prepare PA thin films by introducing the TMC in a hexane aerosol with a view to improve sustainability. Combining structural and dynamic neutron investigation, and comparison with our established understanding of PA polymer dynamics from previous studies, will allow us to unravel the fundamental structure-transport mechanisms.
