Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) study of hygroscopic biopolymer composite materials in humidity and temperature-controlled environment
Abstract: Hygroscopic materials are of extensive interest in a wide range of research topics, including water retention in biomedical applications and atmospheric water harvesting. Biopolymer composites are actively researched as alternatives to synthetic polymer materials made from fossil fuel owing to their potential advantages in alleviating environment impacts, biodegradability, and cost-effectiveness. The behaviour of these materials, such as water sorption, are closely related to their nanoscale structures in addition to the chemical functionalities. Small angle scattering (SAS) techniques are advantageous for characterising these systems, in particular, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) with contrast matching allows us to reveal structures with different scattering cross-section in the matrix. In this proposed experiment, we aim to study the water sorption and desorption behaviour of gelatin-based hygroscopic materials at various temperatures and humidity levels. This would provide better understanding of the impact of functionalisation methods to the packing of chains in these systems and enable rational design of hygroscopic biopolymer-based water harvesting and retention systems in more sustainable ways. This experiment also aligns with the commissioning work of a new humidity cell for the SANS instruments.
