Probing multiple spin state transitions in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Na2SrCo(PO4)2

Abstract: Na2SrCo(PO4)2 (NSCP) is a rare example in the triangular-lattice cobaltates showing additional magnetic anisotropies beyond the Heisenberg XXZ model and a great potential for the applications in sub-Kelvin magnetic refrigeration, thus calling for more attentions. Preliminary zero-field neutron powder diffraction measurements at WISH indicate a stripy antiferromagnetic order as its magnetic ground state, consistent with the theoretical prediction. Recently, using high-quality single-crystal samples, two field-induced quantum phase transitions at Hc1 = 0.6 T and Hc2 = 1.8 T, respectively, are clearly observed in the ac susceptibility and adiabatic magnetocaloric effect measurements, whose nature is not well understood yet. Especially, the power-law like temperature dependence of the magnetic specific heat seems to suggest a gapless feature of the intermediate phase in between Hc1 and Hc2, awaiting to be elucidated by microscopic probe like neutron diffraction. We propose to perform single-crystal neutron diffraction on NSCP at the neutron diffractometer WISH, to probe the multiple field-induced spin state transitions, to examine the nature of spin states in different phases, and to complete the magnetic phase diagram tentatively established according to macroscopic measurements.
