Solvation of sodium borates in trimethylphosphate, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and their mixtures

Abstract: Na[BOB] is attractive as a fluorine-free electrolyte salt for sodium-ion batteries, but it?s use is restricted by it?s effective insolubility in organic carbonate solvents. Recently, the solubility and electrochemistry of sodium bis(oxalatoborate) (Na[BOB]) in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and trimethyl phosphate (TMP), and mixtures of these two solvents has been described showing the applicability of these as promising electrolytes for sodium-ion battery research, outperforming many previously studied electrolytes. We aim to examine how Na[BOB] is solvated in these two solvents and then use this knowldge to guide the design of additional, new fluorine-free electrolytes for metal-ion battery applications.
