Catalytic Depolymerization of Bio-based PEF Using DES
Abstract: In this project, we aim to explore a new method for recycling poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF), a promising bio-based plastic expected to enter global markets. Current recycling methods for PEF are limited, and environmental concerns regarding its accumulation make innovative solutions necessary. We will investigate how a specific chemical mixture (urea and zinc chloride, known as a deep eutectic solvent or DES) can break down PEF into its original components for reuse. By using neutron scattering techniques, we hope to understand the detailed molecular processes involved in this reaction, which could help design greener recycling strategies for sustainable plastics.
