Determination of the local structural effects in TiTaV High Entropy Alloy systems

Abstract: High entropy alloys (HEAs), which contain five or more elements in roughly equiatomic proportions, have become one of the most rapidly expanding fields in metallurgy, since their inception in 2004. They have opened new regions of compositional space to explore, offering beneficial and potentially tuneable materials properties, such as high strength and ductility. One such property, which the atomic energy sector is eager to explore, is improved radiation damage tolerance. It is now considered that many of these exceptional properties derive from short range ordering (SRO), whereby there are local preferences for types of neighbours on the atomic scale. This preferential ordering can help increase the radiation tolerance of these materials, with the ordering/clustering acting as a sink for radiation damage. We have identified a set of quinary alloys based around the TiTaV ternary alloy that are of interest for fusion reactors applications. Previous experimentation in the TiTaVWFe system has demonstrated local-clustering linked to radiation damage defects produced by ion implantation. Using variable temperature total scattering experiments (combined Neutron and X-ray) we will determine the type and nature of the SRO in this and related compositionally simpler alloys. This will provide new understanding as to the link between local structure and radiation tolerance in HEAs, that will enable the future tailoring of alloy properties for important atomic energy applications.
