Neutron PDF investigation of polycrystalline N-rich metal nitrides Zr3N4 and LaNx
Abstract: N-rich binary nitrides synthesised in solution have been demonstrated to be active catalysts for ammonia synthesis. It has been previously shown that Hf3N4 forms an almost-amorphous polycrystalline phase that could only be determined by PDF analysis. Similarly, this study aims at determining the structure of Zr3N4 and LaNx synthesised by a similar method in solution. PND will provide information on the locations of carbon and oxygen in the structure that will go beyond what was found in the Hf3N4 structure. The aim is to correlate structure and mobility of lattice nitrogen in these nitrides with their catalytic activity for ammonia synthesis processes.
