Investigation of magnetic structure in a quantum spin liquid mineral Henmilite

Abstract: Natural minerals offer a unique flexibility of crystal structure and magnetic lattice suitable for studying quantum magnetism. Adding to this list, the new mineral Henmilite {Ca2Cu(OH)4[B(OH)4]2}, exhibits pronounced quantum fluctuations suppressing long-range order (LRO) at low temperatures forming a dome-shaped phase boundary under an applied magnetic field. The ground state (and a dedicated pocket in H-T phase diagram) was found to be a quantum spin liquid state by the MuSR experiment. The magnetic structure of the long-range ordered phase (in a magnetic field) is not known. Therefore, we want to investigate the spin structure under an external magnetic field in order to elucidate the underlying mechanisms responsible for the suggested quantum spin liquid behaviour through a neutron di?raction experiment at WISH using a dilution refrigerator.
