Amorphous precursors in the formation of the Metal?organic* *framework TRUMOF-1

Abstract: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly versatile materials with a range of applications, particularly in gas storage and separation. The architecture of a MOF is dictated by the geometrical nature of its building blocks. The combination of OZn4 clusters and 1,3-benzenedicarboxylate (1,3-bdc) linkers has led to the discovery of TRUMOF-1, a MOF with a unique aperiodic structure. Its structure - which can be described as a 3-dimensional Truchet tiling network - offers potential for information storage on an atomic scale like a QR code on a macroscale. Understanding the self-assembly of TRUMOF-1 during synthesis is critical for unlocking its full potential. We hypothesise that the combination of octahedral node coordination and bent linkers leads to frustrated oligomers in solution that precede eventual crystallisation into TRUMOF-1. To investigate this, we propose small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies of the crystallisation process. Together with parallel small-angle X-ray scattering measurements, these experiments will offer insight into the roles of the solvent, linkers and clusters during crystallisation, with the potential to inform the broader field of MOF nucleation and growth mechanisms.
