Characterization of Antimicrobial Peptide Distribution and Nano-Scale Structures in HEC Hydrogels using SANS

Abstract: Studying the structural mechanisms of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in enhancing the mechanical properties of hydrogels is essential for developing effective drug delivery systems. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC)-based hydrogels are promising in biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility, water retention, and tunable mechanical properties. A significant focus is on the encapsulation and controlled release of AMPs, crucial for combating drug-resistant bacteria in applications like wound dressings. However, challenges persist in ensuring peptide stability and controlled release. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) offers a powerful, non-destructive method to investigate the internal nanostructure of hydrogels, providing insights into the spatial distribution of embedded molecules like AMPs. This study aims to utilize SANS to explore how the structural organization of HEC hydrogels influences AMP distribution and release profiles, ultimately affecting their therapeutic efficacy in drug delivery.
