Paclitaxel delivery using lipid-based nanostructured drug carriers

Abstract: Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, accounting for one in six deaths. This disease affects individuals of all ages and ethnic backgrounds, presenting a significant challenge to global public health. The main challenges in breast cancer (BC) chemotherapy are related to drug resistance, especially in the case of triple-negative BC. Nanotechnology strategies can improve the efficacy of chemotherapy by promoting sustained release and reducing systemic toxicity through drug delivery systems (DDS).This project aims to characterize, using Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS), nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) containing ?-caryophyllene (BCP) as a functional excipient (with anticancer and analgesic effects) and the taxane paclitaxel (PTX) as an experimental co-administration strategy to increase the bioavailability and reduce the toxicity of PTX. This study will contribute to the development of a new pharmaceutical formulation based on nanotechnology that is more effective and less toxic than commercially available PTX formulations, with the aim of improving the prognosis and quality of life of patients with BC.
