Study of N insertion and topotactic extraction mediated growth of L10 ordered FeNi via interdiffusion in Cu doped Fe/Ni multilayers

Abstract: L10-ordered FeNi (tetrataenite) exhibits a large saturation magnetization and a robust uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, making it a valuable rare-earth-free candidate for permanent magnet applications. It has been predominantly identified in iron meteorite rocks and its laboratory synthesis has been hindered due to a sluggish diffusion occurring below the order-disorder temperature of about 600 K. In this work, we propose to synthesize a single-phase L10-FeNi through a novel approach known as N insertion and topotactic extraction (NITE), combined with Cu doping in Fe/Ni multilayers. This approach is supposed to enhance the diffusion leading to a novel route for realizing the growth of ordered L10-FeNi phase. Pristine and annealed [Fe-Cu-N/Ni-Cu-N] multilayers will be synthesized using co and reactive sputtering and will be studied using polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) to get simultaneous information about the magnetization and interdiffusion. In our recent work performed using PNR in Cu doped Fe/Ni multilayers, it was observed that the interdiffusion was augmented by about 50 times at 503 K leading to a partial growth of tetrataenite. With the NITE approach combined with Cu doping, it is anticipated the growth of tetrataenite phase with a high-order parameter can be realized.
