Investigating CO2 Hydrate Phases in Confinement using Neutron Diffraction
Abstract: Clathrate hydrate is crucial for carbon capture, thermal storage, hydrogen storage, and desalination. Understanding CO2 hydrate microparticles' phase transitions and crystal structures is essential. We employ neutron diffraction to investigate CO2 hydrate phases in confinement, offering deep matter penetration. Experiments will be conducted on the GEM instrument at various gas pressures and 277.15 K, studying CO2 hydrate microparticles encapsulated in dry water (hydrophobic silica, H18). Insights into CO2 hydrate formation and stability mechanisms in dry water will be gained. The data will enhance hydrate-based system efficiency, enabling eco-friendly and cost-effective solutions for greenhouse gas mitigation, energy storage and recovery, and renewable energy and clean water promotion. This project's successful completion will impact industries and address environmental and energy challenges. Building an in-depth collaboration with Australia National University, we will combine expertise with the GEM instrument's capabilities to achieve a comprehensive understanding of CO2 hydrate phases in confinement and their implications for clathrate hydrate technology. This collaboration will foster knowledge exchange and strengthen international research ties, paving the way for future advancements.
