The effects of short-range ordering on the coercivity of Fe49Co-2V magnets

Abstract: Aviation accounts for approximately 2% of global CO2 emissions and 4% of all climate change impacts annually. One solution is electric aircraft, and Fe49Co-2V magnetic alloys are critical for achieving this as they offer a 25% power density boost over Si-steels. However, this benefit is eroded by performance variations arising from manufacturing, which has been previously attributed to Short-Range Ordering (SRO). Chemical order changes have been shown to greatly affect Fe49Co-2V properties such as yield stress, saturation magnetisation, coercivity, and resistivity. Despite the importance of SRO on alloy performance, no studies have quantified the nature of SRO present, and correlated it with Fe49Co-2V property changes. This proposed experiment will use neutron total scattering to provide a better understanding of what post-quench annealing times and temperatures are required to achieve a wide Fe49Co-2V chemical ordering range. We subsequently aim to relate SRO to changes measured in Fe49Co-2V coercivity, saturation magnetisation, resistivity, and yield stress, all of which vary when heat treated from the disordered state.
