Searching for short-range and possible long-range magnetic ordering in single crystals of NdTa7O19

Abstract: Rare-earth (RE) based geometrically frustrated magnets represent a promising avenue in the search of enigmatic quantum spin liquids (QSLs). Our previous study has identified a novel QSL candidate NdTa7O19, with strong Ising anisotropy on the triangular spin lattice. Previous powder neutron diffraction measurements done on the WISH instrument (RB2000222) and at ILL revealed sizable magnetic diffuse scattering as a signature of short-range spin correlations of the Ising type. Recently, we have grown large single crystals of this material. Here we propose a single crystal neutron diffraction study on the WISH instrument to map and compare the in-plane and out-of-plane spin correlations in the reciprocal space in our attempt to characterize the QSL state realized in NdTa7O19.
