Microscopic dynamics of brain lipids in a model membrane: Influence of phenylalanine

Abstract: Phenylketonuria (PKU), an inherited disorder, is mainly associated with the self-assembly of toxic fibrillar aggregates of phenylalanine (Phe) in blood at elevated concentrations. Present proposal aims to understand the effects of the Phe on the microscopic dynamics of lipids in unilamellar vesicles by using quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS). The vesicles will be prepared by brain extracted lipids to closely mimic the biological membrane. This QENS results along with the structural data from synchrotron X-ray scattering experiments may help to understand the molecular mechanism of suchdiseases.
