FePSe3: Probing and fitting spin orbit excitons in 2d magnets

Abstract: FePSe3 is a two dimensional material which has an orbital degeneracy tied to the Fe2+ site. FePSe3 undergoes a combined structural and magnetic transition at around 110 K. We propose to measure the spin-orbit excitations in this material using the MAPS spectrometer. The two dimensional nature will make this compound an ideal system to attempt fits of our spin-orbit exciton models to and also apply newly developed machine learning algorithms. This will allow us to characterize the various competing single-ion and magnetic exchange terms in the magnetic Hamiltonian and relate these to the magnetoelastic properties.
