Determining the crystal structure of a newly discovered phase in the NaCl-D2O system relevant to cryovolcanism at icy moons
Abstract: We have recently identified a new metastable crystalline NaCl-D2O phase that forms under low temperature conditions relevant to cryovolcanic processes on icy moons. This is the first new NaCl hydrate reported at ambient pressures in over 150 years. We aim to determine the crystal structure of this previously unknown NaCl-D2O phase. Because its presence could act as a proxy for the physical conditions of cryovolcanic activity on icy moons, its characterisation is crucial with two upcoming missions to icy moons aiming to study cryovolcanic deposits on their surfaces.
