Investigating Micro and Nano-Scale Pathways for Enhanced Underground Hydrogen Storage Efficiency

Abstract: Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier that is a key part of the global transition to a low-carbon energy future. However, its lower volumetric calorific value than other gaseous fuels means that better storage solutions are needed. Underground hydrogen storage (UHS) has emerged as a solution to overcome limitations in surface storage capacity and discharge capabilities. Understanding the porosity and pore size distribution at the micro- and nanoscale in geological formations is crucial for optimizing UHS efficiency. We propose using SANS along with other imaging techniques to find basic answers about where pores are located and how they connect at the micro- and nanoscale for UHS. Statistical insights into pore structures will guide the development of models linking microporosity and fluid flow pathways during UHS, facilitating a more accurate assessment of storage capacity. Samples from diverse geological formations will undergo meticulous analysis, requiring SANS2D and well-established techniques to determine pore size distribution and fractal behavior within the samples. This multidisciplinary approach is crucial to comprehending UHS efficiency and paving the way for sustainable hydrogen storage solutions.
