Investigation of the nuclear and magnetic structure of Na2Mn3O7
Abstract: Layered sodium manganese oxides have attracted extensive attention within the literature due to their potential as electrode materials in battery technologies but additionally the propensity to exhibit exotic magnetic states. The latter arises as a result of the geometrically frustrated connectivity of the magnetic manganese cation which results in not pairwise interactions being satisfied. The layered oxide Na2Mn3O7, is interesting as it has a "Maple Leaf" manganese connectivity resulting in the potential for complex magnetic order. Few investigations have been performed on this material with the vast majority of these focussed on battery cycling experiments. Furthermore, our recent discovery that Na2Mn3O7 readily hydrates under normal conditions also sheds significant doubt on the few measurements available in the literature. To date (that we are aware of) no neutron diffraction data has been collected. As such neither the nuclear nor the magnetic structure of pristine material has been experimentally confirmed. We propose to collect variable temperature powder neutron diffraction data on a material which has been stored in a glove box in order to clarify the room temperature nuclear structure and understand the structural and magnetic behaviour as a function of temperature.
