Self-assembly and structural changes in nanorods formed by anthracene and chlorophyll-based derivatives

Abstract: We propose a SANS experiment to (i) gain structural insight on nanotubes formed by anthracene derivatives and (ii) using time-resolved experiments, investigate structural changes in fibres formed by chlorophyll-based derivatives. This builds upon recent beamtime results from LARMOR (RB2220130). We have already obtained data on these systems using SAXS (KEK, Japan) and atomic force microscopy, but SAXS only attains a single, complex contrast profile and microscopy only observes the product out of solution. SANS is required to facilitate the global fitting of multiply contrasted datasets necessary to build up a detailed structural picture of these complex assemblies. While the experiment could run on any TS2 beamline, SANS2D is preferred, as these are dilute and relatively weakly scattering systems. The lower background of SANS2D will allow feature-filled scattering at mid-high Q to be better visualised.
