Spin-orbit excitons and magnetostriction in Fe2TiO4
Abstract: We propose to measure the magnetic excitations in the spinel Fe2TiO4 with the goal of understanding the single-ion and interacting terms in the magnetic Hamiltonian. This compound is highly magnetostrictive relating to an orbital degree of freedom on the Fe2+ site. We aim to experimental map out the excitations and model this ground state using a mutlilevel spin-wave formalism. The proposal requires the use of Merlin given the mult rep capability allowing several dynamic ranges to be probed at the same time.
