Investigation of the Structural Evolution of Small Molecule-Doped Ethomeen 18/12 Self Assembled Structures in Different Solvents

Abstract: The precise mechanism by which organic friction modifiers adsorb to a metal surface and reduce friction and wear remains unclear. Conflicting results exist between the currently accepted theory for lubrication and molecular dynamics simulations, with the latter indicating that the adsorption of micellar aggregates on metal surfaces may play a key role in reducing friction. In order to utilise these compounds optimally, this mechanism must be precisely understood. This will enable the information of the next generation of friction modifiers that drastically improve the lifetime of engines and significantly reduce fuel emissions. In previous experiments, we have investigated the impact of small biofuel-related molecules on the self-aggregation of E1812 in dodecane. These studies have highlighted the importance of hydrogen-bonding for micellisation. In this work, we hope to investigate the impact of solvent polarity on the formation of these structures through the use of SANS and deuteration.
