Magnon dispersion relation of monoclinic alpha-RuCl3
Abstract: Alpha-RuCl3 has been explored extensively in the context of realizing the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, a collective magnetic state which does not order at low temperature, but instead fluctuates at low temperature. The Kitaev model is solvable and suggests that is has entangled Majorana fermions as spin excitations, which can be used in quantum computing. We propose to map out the full magnon dispersion on RuCl3. The Kitaev physics in the material appears highly dependent on sample quality and previous inelastic studies have been focused on the continuum excitation or were of low quality due to the samples used. We believe that with large high quality single crystals we will be able to map out the full spin-wave dispersion and use this to determine the appropriate spin model for the material.
