Thermo-stimulable hydrogels based on PEG chains cross-linked by fatty acids self-assemblies of tunable structure
Abstract: Hydrogels are solid materials mainly composed of water and hydrophilic polymeric chains cross-linked by chemical or physical bonds. In this work, the nodes are composed by the self-assembly of 12-hydroxystearic acid (HSA), a biobased fatty acid. They aggregate in micrometric multilamellar tubes at low temperature and in nanometric micelles above a tunable temperature1. The polymer network will be formed by Poly(ethylene-glycol) (PEG), an hydrophilic polymer which should be hydrophobized at each end. We expect these hydrophobized extremities will insert in the hydrophobic self assembly of HSA. The temperature of transition between tubes and micelles was triggered to be 37°C targeting biomedical applications. We have already studied the structure of these hydrogels for small PEG molecular masses (with a radius of gyration of 22.8 Å) and found vesicles at low temperature and micelles at high temperature with the polymer decorating these structures. The aim of this proposal is to study now the system in presence of larger grafted PEG chains. We also plan some contrast variations experiments to solve the respective structure of HSA aggregates and polymer chains in the mixtures. We will need to use deuterated grafted PEG, that we have already synthetized in our lab. [1] Fameau, A. L., Cousin, F., Saint-Jalmes, A. (2017). Langmuir, 33(45), 12943-12951.
