Study on quantum vibrational excitations in spin 1/2 dimers in K2Co2(SeO3)3
Abstract: Recently, triangular lattices of 3d7 Co2+ spin 1/2 dimers were reported in K2Co2(SeO3)3. In our recent LET experiment, we discovered the coexistence of quasi-long-range magnetic ordering and a highly unusual equidistant set of excited states. We hypothesize that these excitations arise from a magneto-elastic interaction that gives rise to composite quasi-particles with both a spin and a vibrational character. We request rapid access beam time to be able to provide what we believe will be compelling evidence for a qualitative breakdown of the Born Oppenheimer approximation. The anticipated high-impact publication will provide important insights for progress on a range of stubborn problems in quantum magnetism.
