Single crystal investigation of the magnetic structure of Ho-Au-Al Tsai-type quasicrystal approximant.
Abstract: We aim at acquiring neutron single crystal investigations of a ferromagnetic Ho-Au-Al 1/1 approximant crystal in order to refine their low-temperature magnetic structure. The crystal has the space group m-3 and the Ho magnetic ions can be simply viewed as a identical icosahedra arranged in a bcc lattice. Using previous studies of the R-Au-Si system (R = Tb, Ho), we anticipate that the transition appearing at T = 4.6 K leads to a complex non-collinear, non-coplanar ferromagnet with the spins creating loops canted out-of-plane towards the (111) direction. The inflection the Ho15Au64Al21 sample shows in its magnetic susceptibility around 3K may point to reconfigurations of the spin depending on the temperature. Refinement of the magnetic structure for different temperatures will be used to better understand magnetism in R-Au-Al approximant systems.
