Elucidation of the magnetic order of pyrochlore iridate In2Ir2O7
Abstract: Pyrochlore oxides display a variety of exotic electronic states produced by the interplay of correlated d- or f-electrons on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice. Pyrochlore iridates A2Ir2O7 (A = Y, rare earth) with spin-orbit-entangled Jeff = ½ state host novel electronic states and undergo a metal-to-insulator transition as a function of A cation radius. In the insulating state, pyrochlore iridates exhibit all-in-all-out (AIAO) magnetic order. We discovered a new pyrochlore iridate In2Ir2O7 with pure Jeff = ½ band character induced by strong In-O-Ir hybridisation, contrasting other pyrochlore iridates. Such distinct orbital character and hybridisation should strongly impact the magnetic exchange. Indeed, our band calculations and preliminary neutron diffraction experiments suggest a non-AIAO magnetic order. We propose to determine the magnetic structure of In2Ir2O7 on WISH. This work will exemplify a novel magnetic order in frustrated spin-orbit entangled magnets generated by covalent A-O bonds.
