Crystal and Magnetic structure of Ba2MnS3

Abstract: Transition metal (TM) oxides have been at the forefront of condensed matter research for decades due to the myriad of exotic phenomena they can host such as colossal magnetoresistance, superconductivity, ferro- and piezo- electricity, multiferroicity, simple and complex magnetism.... By contrast, TM sulfides are relatively unexplored despite the obvious handle they can provide in tuning the interactions between the TM ions. In parallel, the study of spin chain compounds is undergoing a resurgence due to the fact they can exhibit topological properties, which are therefore free from atomic imperfections. We have recently synthesized a high quality single crystal of Ba2MnS3, which comprises chain of Mn2+ spins. We wish to determine the crystal and magnetic structure on this thus far poorly understood compound using single crystal neutron diffraction.
