Monitoring effect of RH fluctuations in easel painting canvases using neutron radiography
Abstract: The aim of our work is to further investigate the effect of moisture sorption resulting from treatment using novel nanocellulose-based consolidants as an alternative to lining and the use of common adhesives. Some measurements by neutron radiography have already been conducted using the neutron imaging beamline, IMAT, ISIS Neutron and Muon Source UK, to determine the spatial distribution of moisture during programmed cycles of sorption and desorption in these canvases. A custom-built sample cell was built and this was connected to an RH controller so that the same programmed RH cycles were imposed on samples as in dielectric and mechanical studies. Some modifications have now been made to the application of the nanocellulose formulations to limit moisture sorption during the application.Work is proceeding in collaboration with practising conservators, also on a range of canvas materials
