Neutron reflectometry study of birch glucuronoxylan at the oil-water interface

Abstract: Glucuronoxylan (GX) extract from birch wood has been proven to be a potential sustainable and versatile emulsifier capable of protecting emulsions against physical separation and chemical degradation, but its stabilization mechanism is yet to be fully understood. Previous studies have proven the central role of lignin in the interfacial activity, especially on the preferential adsorption of different types of lignin-carbohydrate complexes at the oil-water interface. However, the physical state of the adsorbed layer of GX at the oil-water interface is yet to be fully characterized. Therefore, we propose to use neutron reflectometry (NR), known for its capability to characterize buried interfaces under different contrast conditions, to determine the difference in thickness, roughness, and penetration depth of the adsorbed layer at the oil-water interface formed by different grades of GX. A complete understanding of the adsorbed layer would allow the emulsifying properties of GX to be tailored for different purposes, such as protecting sensitive oil-soluble bioactive compounds or targeted emulsion-based delivery systems, leading towards a more sustainable and circular utilization of birch wood biomass.
