Neutron diffraction investigation of magnetic correlations of the S= 1 antiferromagnetic trimer chain compound LiNi1.5P2O7
Abstract: The quantum S-1 trimer chains with periodic couplings of J1-J1-J2 (intratrimer J1 and intertrimer J2) are of current interest due to unconventional properties arising from the strong quantum fluctuations and topology, such as the occurrence of the magnetization plateau and composite excitations. The presence/absence of plateau are related to relative strength and sign of the J1 and J2 which also determine the nature of the magnetic ground state. We propose neutron diffraction study on S-1 AFM trimer chain compound LiNi1.5P2O7 using the WISH diffractometer to determine the magnetic ground state, temperature evolution of spin-spin correlations and order parameter, and the nature of magnetic phase transition. The present study will shed light on the novel magnetic correlations in trimer chain compounds with S = 1 in general as well as would be helpful for a validation of the theoretical predictions and future experimental exploration of the plateau states.
