Solving the structure-property relationship in Ba4Ir3O10
Abstract: Transition metal oxides with strong spin-orbit coupling, such as ruthenates and iridates, are highly topical for the exotic quantum states they can host. As those states are highly sensitive to the structure Ir-O network, detailed structural characterisation is essential if the underlying physics is to be correctly understood. In the hexagonal perovskite family of iridates, Ba4Ir3O10 has two recent reports, one with no order seen down to 0.2 K, but in the second, long-range order onsets at 25 K. It is not clear what is different between two samples of the same material that causes the drastic difference in their properties, though something evidently must be. The ground-state magnetic structure of the ordered material was also not determined. We have prepared samples that show both behaviours. We wish to determine the crystal and magnetic structures/correlations in this material.
