Tuning the Nano Structures of Micellar Aggregates through a New Group of Surfactants (Aduxols), as Studied by Small Angle Neutron Scattering
Abstract: Cationics are widely used for various applications, e.g. fabric softening, antimicrobial action, oilfield applications and pesticides, all of which involve the strong interaction of the cationic group with an oppositely charged surface. We developed a new method of making the ethoxylated cationics (Aduxols) makes it possible to combine relatively precise amounts of EO as a pair of chains of close to equal length with a final single EO to create the cationic charge and hence to tune the amphiphilicity reasonably accurately. We propose to study the structure of micellar aggregates of both cationic Aduxols and non-ionic versions, and more importantly, the ability to manipulate the Nano structures using cationic/non-ionic mixtures. Such systems will massively extend the range of applications of such surfactants, and advance our understanding of how to manipulate self-assembly.
