Study on the magnetic dynamics of the honeycomb compound Ba2Ni(PO4)2

Abstract: Due to the interplay between quantum fluctuations and geometric frustrations, geometrically frustrated magnet exhibits a large degeneracy of the ground state and demonstrates exotic properties, such as fractional magnetization platform and so on. The ground state and quantum magnetization process have been well understood both theoretically and experimentally for two-dimensional (2D) spin-1/2 system. However, the quantum effects remain elusive when the spin moment increases. Ba2Ni(PO4)2 is a 2D spin-1 frustrated quantum magnet with honeycomb arrangement of the magnetic Ni2+ ions and zigzag chain structure along a axis. This special spin configuration leads to interesting properties. We propose to study the spin dynamics of the ground state, which will help us to reveal the complex interaction in Ba2Ni(PO4)2 and provide links between macroscopic properties and microscopic mechanism.
